The streets of Saigon

Travel in Vietnam by bike at night. Even after more than eight years in Hanoi and Saigon there's still a wee buzz attached. In among all the headaches, negativity and freaked out inner moments I think I mostly still enjoy it.

Every drive home is a mini-adventure! I remember thinking it was like a rollercoaster, except with a much higher chance or serious injury!

Totally agree. Even as a xe om passenger its the thing mostly likely to pull me out of a bad mood and make me smile.

From a giggling driver to flying past Uncle Ho's Mausolem lit up at night on my way home every day - I love it.

Unlike 99% of motorbike drivers here, the people who pay my wages VSO, insist on me having all the right paperwork, insurance etc and on me doing the driving test. So far the mountain of paperwork has put me off riding my own motorbike.

But with eight months to go I think now might the right time to ressurect the plan and to get mobile and see some of the surrounding countryside while I can.

Oh and xe om-ing has reached new heights since I started listening to my Ipod en-route. Every trip is like being in a music video. Top tip download Desserter's Songs by Mercury Rev it's still the best xe-om listening.

Although I had a very pleasurable short ride listening to Slade's "Coz I Love you" the other day. Slade (forget the Christmas crap) - still the most underrated band in British musical history?
