Saigon night

Another shot in what is fast becoming photoweek from the streets of Saigon, Vietnam. I like this one a lot. For those who've never visited Vietnam - and have a good imagination - look at the big version and 'listen' to hear what life is like on the streets of Saigon by night.

pieman i'm curious as to what the prevalent name for vietnam's biggest city is. it used to be saigon but now is ho chi minh city. which one do most vietnamese use? saigon or ho chi minh city?
you're using "saigon" so i'm guessing that at least some vietnamese still refer to the city as that?

Danny, officially the city is called Ho chi minh city, so if you're sending mails to someone living there or doing something that has to do with legal documents or papers, the name is Ho Chi Minh city. Other than that, people usually refer to it as Saigon, as in "oh I'm saigonese" or "I'm from Saigon"..etc. All of my friends living there calling themselves Saigonese, and we were all born after 1975.

Officially the city is HCM but most people live in Vietnam and all Vietnamese living abroad always refer it as Saigon.

Hi, I dont think it's a big deal about calling HCM or Saigon, because Vietnamese people use both names but for foreigners sometimes Saigon is much easier to say because it's shorter and easier to remember.

Foreigner usually call it HCM until they arrived in the city and realizing that the locals always refer to it as Saigon. In other words, they coming with HCM in their mind and go away with a Saigon memory
