9. Economical bird's nest white fungus

Beverage: Nuoc yen ngan nhi/Economical bird's nest white fungus

Ingredients: Water, sugar, white fungest (not my spelling), bird's nest, preservative (211)

Appearance: Of something I wish I hadn't bought and something that makes me wonder why I set myself up for this task in the first place. Shit. Half foggy liquid, half white fungus/bird's nest frogspawn suspended mid-drink. Unappetising about covers it.

Aroma: Much like the other sweet drinks I've tried namely mia lau and green grass jelly. Not unpleasant, but after sampling previous delights in the past hour this drink comes as the penultimate tipple at the end of a rapid fire, think on your feet, eight can, sit it out until you're teeth are begging you to stop, softdrink test. Smell doesn't bode well, but let's give it a chance.

Taste: The solids, although more visible than my previous avian infested quaff, are far less noticeable as you drink them. Like small bumps in the drink. Not as awful as the appearance would suggest. Not overly sweet like some of the others, but there is an aftertaste of something like bubblegum. Cheap bubblegum that's been chewed for a while and is now stuck to a pavement in London somewhere between High Barnet and Highbury.

If this drink were a car it would be... a Kia. Cheap, economical but a bit crap.

Our survey said...  3.92 out of 10. The lumps look scary, but the taste is less so. 0.92 extra points for the use of the word economical in the name of this drink. A first? and only ever use? Maybe.

Man, I bought a similar drink today. Brand was the only difference. After opening it, smelling it, and taking a fair sip, I think I can safely say that it was the worst thing I have ever drank in my life.
